Building a Weather Plan for Outdoor Events in Eastern Washington
2024-02-08 · 4 min read

The forecast is not a plan. In Eastern Washington a 95-degree afternoon can turn into a 55-degree night, and canyon wind shows up without asking. Here's the contingency framework we use with clients.
Cover first
A properly engineered and anchored tent handles sun, rain and most wind events. The anchoring method depends on ground type — stakes in turf, weighted ballast on asphalt or over irrigation. Decide this before install day, not during it.
Temperature both directions
Book cooling fans for July and August daytime events and patio heaters for anything in shoulder season or after sunset at elevation. Both can be reserved as standby items so you're not gambling on the ten-day forecast.
Sidewalls, lighting and power
Sidewalls turn a shade structure into a room. Even if you never close them, having them on site is cheap insurance. Confirm circuits or a generator for lighting, fans, heaters, catering and the band — power is the most common day-of failure point.
Frequently asked questions
At what wind speed does a tent come down?
It depends on the structure, anchoring and site. We monitor conditions and make the call with safety first — that's part of what you're renting.
Can I add heaters or fans at the last minute?
Usually yes, subject to availability. Reserving them as standby items is safer during peak season.
